Introduction: The typical machining courses here at HUHS are designed so that 10th – 12th graders spend much of their time learning different machining processes and techniques. Throughout the many different courses and levels offered, each student gets plenty of hands on time and experiences developing many different projects. Some of these projects are just for practice, some are for fun and even some of these projects can actually be taken home and used.
The main thing is that every student is learning, learning more then ever imagined. In machine shop students apply skills from each and every other class they’ve ever taken. Many students truly enjoy doing this, but are they seeing the true importance in all of it? Are the students just enrolling in these amazing classes just because there fun? Are the students really thinking of this kind of work as a possible future career choice? Are the students think about Careers? That’s what it’s really all about, isn’t it?
Purpose: The intent of this unit is not only for students to raise their awareness of the importance of a career (working conditions, benefits and salary) it is also intended for the student to develop important people skills through arranging and speaking face to face with a real life employer.
The unit will guide students as they closely examine the importance of career and the impact a career can have on the standard of living. Once they understand the impact a career can have on life the student will more specifically identify and research one particular tool, die or machining related career of their choice. In doing so students will gain more of an understanding as to why they may want to and how important it is to, acquire these vocational machining skills at the high school level. Even more importantly the students will have a better understanding and more respect for all the things they learn at this level.
